The Super Secret Recipe to Having It ALL

Learned While Cooking Brown Rice, Kombucha Tea and Green Leafy Vegetables.

You have dreams and goals that you’d like to see happen in this lifetime. You’ve created the vision board and your top ten list. And you also have secret desires you keep close to your heart and tell no one at all. And then you check into the reality of your life: the bed still needs to be made, there are dozens of tasks to juggle, and at the and of the day when you flop in front of the TV or a good book, you are happy to have stayed afloat and checked things off the to do list.

How does one “have it all”? The life expansion you see in your dreams with the discipline of day-to-day living?

It’s a struggle we all face. And though many offer up solutions (The Fast Track to Success Program or the Wish Fulfillment Master Class), it will never be enough.  I know, because I’ve probably read that book or taken the class.

Do you want to know the real secret?

Come closer and I’ll share it with you…

Ready?  The secret is you must harness two opposing life forces that are contained within YOU and life itself.  Huh?  Let me explain…

The secret to having it all was revealed to me back when I was learning about the benefits of brown rice, kombucha tea and green leafy vegetables, within a discipline known as Macrobiotics.  In 2002, I spent a year studying holistic health counseling and nutrition. This discipline is akin to chasing an elusive holy grail for the “perfect balance” to healthy eating.  As soon as you think you’ve found it, you have not!  (Tofu good – tofu bad; Atkins vs. the Food Pyramid; raw food or one pot meals….)

Just as the impossibility of finding the exact meal plan that will always work, the secret to having it all in life (your dreams while also needing to take out the trash) will never be found within a simple, one-answer solution. Instead, it lies in embracing the seesaw balance of it all.   In macrobiotics they refer to this as the Chinese labels of YIN and YANG…which together bring wholeness.

How does this look when it comes to your DREAMS and having it all?  YIN is associated with femininity. It is soft, diffuse and tranquil. Just like your vision and dreams.  YANG is associated with masculinity. In contast is is hard, focused, and aggressive. Like your to do list and deadlines.

Your Super Secret Recipe to having it all is to combine the Yin and Yang ingredients and work with both energies.

Here are your recipes.

The YIN path to having what you want:

  • Being Open
  • Following Your Heart
  • Inspiration
  • Flow
  • Letting go and allowing

The YANG way to having what you want:

  • Goal Setting
  • Discipline
  • Persistence
  • Schedule
  • Tasks

Although certain elements may manifest more strongly within your personality or at different times, everything you accomplish has both yin and yang aspects.

Yin and Yang are perfect opposites, one no better than the other. They are, interconnected and interdependent and never truly separate, and together bring wholeness. When you bring the forces of feminine and the masculine together, you have  CREATION.

The next time you catch yourself envisioning your dreams coming true,  while doing the laundry…know that you are striking that perfect and very human balance of YIN with YANG. Go for it.  Or stop and be still.

To have it ALL, you need both.

How do you balance YIN and YANG in your life? What does “having it all” mean to you?

In the end, it's all about taking some action. But some people have different behavior preferences than others. Some people make lists and follow them while other people just make lists.

Yin skills are very different from Yang skills. Of course, you can learn both but some skills go against type for some people which makes them uncomfortable.

How do you motivate someone to Have It All if they have to be uncomfortable half the time in order to find balance?

    Hi Corin,
Finding the Yin / Yang balance definitely includes knowing yourself and your nature. I am by default more YIN. So to get from my creative inspiration place to producing something “concrete” I need to put in YANG support. For this I use deadlines (If I know someone else is counting on me, I’ll find a way to get it done…), I use a timer to keep me focused, and I also love working with coaches who can help me with best steps to get the outcomes I want.

On the other hand – if you are YANG type, you will need to find ways to get away from the schedule and deadlines to tap into the spiritual/creative forces that are also so important to creating.

Thanks for your excellent point and question (fellow INFP’er!) I will also be addressing this more in PART 2 next week (“Mixing it up and finding your Yin/Yang Balance.”)

    Love getting comments from YOU!

I promise to respond as soon as I can this weekend (or 1st thing next week)– as I am out in Park City, Utah for some mountain/snow boarding/r&r time (walking my talk for “having it all” ;-0 ). Woot!

Heather, thanks for your fantastic newsletter as usual! I really like this article – all of it – I believe you are right about the Yin and Yang thing – just passed my driving test – so there is a dream with reality for you:). I am glad to hear (as a Canadian) you are enjoying the Olympics – I have the theme going through my head right now and everyday actually. If you watch the Canadian stations you'll have heard the “I Believe” theme at least a few times – it's inspiring. Keep up the great work!

    Heather,

You are so wise and I couldn't agree with you more. The secret of life is truly mastering the balance within yourself between the masculine yang energy with the feminine yin. When we're off balance we suffer … either by working too hard (very yang) or being very unproductive (yin).

To have it all, you must indeed have equitable balance … in your love life, in your career and in your lifestyle.

    Great article!
    Love, Cherry

    Hey there Jennifer!
I have only watched the Olympics from NBC here in the States, so I will need to find the “I Believe” theme on You Tube. (Love that we can find most broadcasts on the internet these days.)

Congratulations on passing your Driving Test! What's the next adventure now that you are more mobile? :)

    Cherry,
Always great to hear from you! And as you know, the balance is truly an “ART”! Thanks for all you do for men and women to understand each other better. Love having you in my circle of influence.
