When the Right Ingredients Come Together

Soul-filled Guest Post

by Tracey Ceurvels, The Busy Hedonist

An old boyfriend once told me that his goal in life was to be paid for being himself, a philosophy I quickly adopted for my own life. Except for those times when I thought I wasn’t living the adage: for several years, while I dreamt of working as a writer/editor for a newspaper’s dining section or a glossy food magazine like Food & Wine or the now shuttered Gourmet, I worked in the marketing departments of many high-end magazines—Condé Nast Traveler, Vogue, More Magazine, among others.

But my heart wasn’t into marketing and copywriting. I often fantasized I’d run into Ruth Reichl, Gourmet’s editor in chief, in the elevator at the Condé Nast building in Times Square and she’d hire me to travel around the world and report back about my food discoveries. But in the world of magazines, it’s hard to jump ship from marketing over to editorial, so I left all that behind and took a leap of faith to do what I truly love: write about food, travel, chefs and restaurants, from the comforts of my own home and my neighborhood coffee shops.

For several years I wrote articles in a variety of newspapers and magazines. I even wrote a novel and recently acquired a literary agent, on Facebook of all places. I was enjoying my laptop lifestyle, but I wasn’t making a ton of money either. And then in the midst of all that I had a baby, my beautiful daughter Sabrina.

So there I was, a new mom, still trying to write articles while she was napping—not an easy feat I can assure you. But because of her, I wanted a successful laptop lifestyle more than ever. That way I could spend every day with Sabrina, be witness to all her milestones and not have to send her off to daycare. Friends kept nudging me to start a blog, which I was adamantly against. I was still old school and didn’t know what could come of it. Plus, admittedly, it was a bit scary to put myself out there.

But one day, exhausted from very hectic life, and without many options, I thought, why not? If nothing else it could serve as a live resume of sorts, which I could show to editors in hopes of acquiring more writing assignment. Or maybe, just maybe, it could bring in some additional income somehow.

These were the seeds that launched my blog, The Busy Hedonist, and I can report that it’s one of the best moves I’ve ever done for my career and lifestyle.

And aside from the writing I continued to do, I was even able to join two aspects of my life—cooking and being a parent—into helping other busy food lovers in their kitchens.

But wait there’s more! All the marketing and copywriting experience I had under my belt…the stuff I was pretty good at, but didn’t like at the time? I had no idea back then it would affect my current life and lifestyle. I was listening to a video from marketing maven Marie Forleo. One of her mottos is that she “freaking loves marketing,” a belief that’s garnered her much success.

That’s when I bell went off in my head. I can do what I love to do AND use my marketing/copywriting skills to attract financial success, not something I’d ever considered until that moment.

Now, all the concepts of my life have come together like a perfectly prepared, multi-course meal, followed by dessert: I run to playgrounds and play dates with my daughter, visit my favorite spice stores, gourmet shops and greenmarkets. I develop recipes for my readers and subscribers, color with my daughter while something is baking in the oven, help other busy moms with getting dinner on the table, take my daughter to food tastings. I visit new restaurants and dine out a few times a week for stories I’m writing, and I travel abroad to write about food—my next adventure is an Amazonian cruise in Peru with a renowned chef.

So when it comes to being paid for being you, it can happen. All those crazy twists and turns that have happened in your life, perhaps even the ones that have brought you down, they are meaningful, even when you feel like they’re dead ends in your quest to get where you’re trying to go. Trust me, I did not enjoy sitting in my cubicle in midtown Manhattan. My mind always wandered to far-flung places and to a daily life consisting of writing about things I enjoy. Because I follow my dreams with a passionate force, never settling, my life has magically melded together the way I dreamt it would, a simmering stew with just the right ingredients.

I absolutely love my laptop lifestyle and wouldn’t trade it in for anything. Though admittedly, I might reconsider if Ruth Reichl or Dana Cowin of Food & Wine magazine called me with a project.

    HI Tracey,
Did you go to cooking school? Where is your training for creating recipes? Which branch of your business is most profitable to you? Did you create a business model? Thank you for sharing your story.

    I’m a food lover too!

I am just starting this and I hope that I can get to a place where I can balance it all. How do you do it and still look amazing?

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

Hey Miss Busy Hedonist! Happy I could make your day even busier today. :)

Tracey is a friend of mine from when I lived in NYC so it is wonderful to feel like I am having a full circle moment. Tracey I remember running into you on the streets of the West Village when I was making my momentous decision to leave the city and travel and work from my laptop. And you were just starting your blog.

I love seeing where it all is today! My question is what has been the biggest lessons in blogging? And for someone who is just starting off with a seed of an idea for a blog, what would be your best advice?

    thanks & love you.

    Hi everyone:

Welcome! I’m so glad you could join me as I sit here sipping my morning coffee after an already busy morning.

Thank you, Heather, for inviting me today, and I loved that day we ran into each other on your old street.

Beth: I did not go to culinary school, but I have taken a few cooking classes. Mostly I learned in the restaurants I have worked in and by lots of practice. My mom was always baking when I was growing up, and I learned a lot from her, too.

I did not come up with a business model at first, though I did figure out my various revenue streams and how much I could generate with certain amounts of subscribers. This helped me focus my efforts and my biggest revenue stream is my monthly subscription in which I offer a month of recipes with an accompanying shopping list.

Nasrin: I tend not to strive for balance but just dive in and do whatever I can each day.

Heather: I’ll be back to answer other questions in a few minutes….I am getting my daughter off to se her aunt.

Wow, Tracey – I absolutely LOVE your story! And how perfect, that everything in your life, even the stuff that you didn’t like all that much, are all contributing to the fabulous life you have today. :)

And I totally resonated with what you wrote about not wanting to launch a blog. I’m in that same boat myself…I love what I do (I teach entrepreneurs how to clear out their clutter so they can do what they love and make room for what really matters to them). And I’m finding I have a lot to say! But I’m not sure about launching a blog.

I’d love to hear you say more about what had you finally decide to jump into blog writing, and how it’s made an impact on your life.

Thanks again, so much, for sharing your story!

    Warmly,
    Sue

Got my cup of coffee too Tracey. :)
And note: re – disqus. When you are back and ready, use the “reply” to individual comments, and then those people will get a notice that you replied to them.

Alright, how hard is this Butterscotch Bundt Cake…I am gonna make it for my family over Christmas.

Heather, to answer your questions, I think that if someone has an idea for a blog, they should simply start right away. I think many people, and I’ve done it myself, mill over ideas until we’re confused and bewildered and then do nothing at all. We think we need the perfect name, the perfect tag line, just the right “niche.” We run around in circles wondering if we’re doing the right thing. But each one of us has our own point of view on the world, and this will shine through. It may take you a few steps forward and a few back, but the ideas can and will evolve and grow over time. My suggestion is to go to WordPress and begin writing about a topic that interests you: if you’re passionate enough about it, that will come through. I have many interests besides food, but because I am so busy being a mom and writer I honed in on one, food (and it is indeed an absolute favorite), to make my life a lot easier. From there I can write articles, develop recipes, travel and have fun in the culinary world. I limited it to one idea, but that one idea is limitless. And it transcends platforms, from web to print and back again.

So my advice is to take a topic you love and blog about it right away. It must be something you love enough to write about day after day. Then watch it magically evolve!

Yes, brilliant. Just get it going.
And I like how the other pieces of your life are still part of your brand “The Busy Hedonist.”

How did you come up with that name?

Like Sue, I loved your story and the great energy you bring to it. I have a client who I keep encouraging to start a blog and she’s finally taking a leap in. I can’t wait to pass this on to her so she can hear about you and how you are faring.

I’m also keen on reading your blog more frequently. I love the ease and the tips you offer.
    glad you’re here!

Yes, banana bread with eggnog is one of my favorites!

I, too, love how it all comes together. It blurs the line between life and work in a very positive way. A friend of mine, a very successful blogger/writer herself, came up with the name.

    Hi Deirdre,

Definitely pass it along to your friend. I’d love to offer advice if she needs any. I was so against having a blog so I’d have some good insight for her.

    Thank you for stopping by!

    Hi Sue:

Thank you for reading my story! I appreciate it. I think what you do would make a wonderful blog. I am sure there are many entrepreneurs who would love your advice. I found with my own life that clearing the clutter, physically and metaphysically, has helped so much.

As far as how I launched: I was a new mom and my head was spinning, as you can imagine. I’d already been a freelance writer, but juggling that with a newborn was next to impossible. The blog became my way of focusing…of having all the things I was living be in one place, so to speak: I could highlight my writing, talk about being a mom, and blog about food, restaurants and cooking. Then I realized that all this life experience and passion could help other people, too. That’s when it really started having an impact. I’ve realized that it’s best to be of service to others, to help them. I also donate 10% of any proceeds from my blog to charities that help feed children and families. So it’s all inter-related.

Each and every one of us has some way of turning the things we love into being of service others.

    Thank you, Sue!

    Hi, Tracey,

Thanks so much for your response…and for your feedback about my topic. Like you, I find that there are so many directions to take with clearing out the clutter (and yes, physically, mentally, spiritually!)…so the idea of using a blog to focus is a good one.

I love how you have combined your own experiences, your own passions, and your unique way of sharing your message (and donate your proceeds!) so you can help other people. As they say “we learn, and then we teach…and then we learn and teach…and then we learn and teach…”

Thanks again! I’m really enjoying learning about you and what you do!

    Warmly,
    Sue

Tracey — would love to hear how you find inspiration for your writing.

And what is your blogging schedule? How often are you posting new material?

  • Anonymous

    Hi Heather:

I blog about 3 times a week and sometimes I do a few blog posts at the same time and schedule them. Other times I’ll write a post late at night for the next day. It all depends on my childcare for the week and how many other projects I have on my plate.

As for inspiration, I really don’t need any. I love to write and I write what I enjoy, whether it’s an article, a blog post, a poem or fiction. The only issue I have these days is time; but I’ve learned to carve out hours here and there to get things done. As a result, when I have a few free hours to myself I am extremely focused and hone in on what I want to do. And when I have time, I make sure not to worry about other things like dishes or groceries or errands. I’ve become Zen-like and stay present to each task that I am doing, so when I am writing, I write, when I’m with my daughter, I am with her 100%, and so on. As a work-at-home mom this has become a great way of existing for me.

    Hi Sue:

I can see totally envision your site about clearing the clutter. And you could have those three (physically, mentally, spiritually) as your categories. Then you’re focused and organized yet expansive at the same time. People would love to hear about those 3 topics! They’re not often brought up together on the same site.

And I have a lot to say about clearing clutter from one’s daily life. It’s allowed me to enjoy life more fully and become more successful.

    Warmly,

    Tracey

Some more Q’s for you, Tracey…

Is sponsorship something you are interested with for your blog?
And say more about this amazonian cruise….wow. Sounds wonderful. Looking forward to those posts!

Can you talk about projects that you have in the pipe line for “The Busy Hedonist”?

And, how was Sabrina’s day today? :)

  • Anonymous

No, but I’ll take a look at his site. I find that in order to stay focused, because I do so much each day, I like to give each aspect of my life my full attention while I am doing it. Of course there is some crossover, but I am very mindful of it. Thank you for the web site recommendation.

As for future projects, I am writing an article called, “A Taste of Peru along the Amazon” for The Boston Globe. In case you haven’t seen my article on underground restaurants in Buenos Aires, here it is: http://www.boston.com/travel/getaways/latinamerica/articles/2010/08/22/buenos_aires_by_way_of_a_menu_not_a_map/

I’ll be going on a cruise in January where a well-known Peruvian chef will be showcasing is cuisine, so I’ll get to see the Amazon while wining + dining. Of course there will be some insider info on my blog.

I was just invited to participate in a fun project by the Wisconsin Cheese Board to promote National Cheese Lover’s Day. I’ll be making mac and cheese and they’ll promote my recipe on a site they’e developed.

And at the beginning of January I’ll be participating in an event called The Cooking Experience in which food journalists will be cooking alongside a chef/nutritionist.

And of course I’ll be offering recipes + tips to my readers on my blog.

I think January is going to be a fun month!

    Tracey

    P.S. Sabrina had a nice day. : )
