Rejuvenate Love: The 5 Love Gremlins

SOUL-FILLED CAFE:  REJUVENATE YOUR LOVE WEEK

See the full schedule here.

Today’s Post is by Heather Gray

As we stride towards Valentine’s Day and a big global celebration of Romantic Love, I have an important question for you…

How’s the romance with YOURSELF going?

Are you giving yourself the OXYGEN first? We all know that a healthy romance actually starts with You.

Did you know that there are Love Gremlins who will wreak mischief on your ability to BE a loving soul? The following are my top 5 Love Gremlins. Ready? Let me introduce you…

#1 The People Pleaser

This gremlin will insist that you attempt to please everyone. Your energy is on “them” and guessing at what will make “them” happy. You often say yes when your heart begs no.

#2 Holding onto Bitterness

We all suffer from experiences in our lives that cause us to suffer. And some require healing, therapy and personal growth. But this gremlin acts like a broken record, re-hashing your victim hood and keeping the old wounds alive. It takes a brave-hearted soul to let go of past hurts, but the reward is self-love and moving on.

#3 Energy Zappers

An energy-zapping gremlin is anything that lowers your energy and thus decreases your life force. Often you become so used to living with your zappers that you are not conscious of their effect on your life. Some examples of zappers might be:

  • Fluorescent lit rooms with no windows
  • Junk food
  • Watching excessive television
  • Always feeling exhausted after having been with a particular person
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Not telling the truth
  • Clutter

#4 Filling your schedule with SHOULD’s

The ‘should’ gremlin has no appreciation for what you are getting accomplished and offers a never-ending barrage of what still ‘should’ be getting done. You’ll know this gremlin is on your back if you are indulging in busyness on a consistent basis, doing a task you don’t enjoy, and working all the time without taking time to rest and rejuvenate.

#5 Running on Empty

This gremlin will insist that you “push” through your tasks without refueling your energy tanks with self-care. The result? Your ability to love gracefully gets replaced by a short-circuiting, exhausted, and moody version of yourself.

The good news is that all 5 gremlins melt away when confronted with large doses of “Self-Love.”

Your Self-Love Challenge.

Repeat after me: Instead of indulging my love gremlins, I make myself a priority by…

  • Filling my energy tanks with my favorite self-care rewards. This can be as simple as spending $4 on a gorgeous magazine that inspires you or pausing for a cup of hot cocoa.
  • Replacing 2 of my energy zappers with energy juicers. For example, if your energy is “zapped” by excessive time on the computer, then walk away from the technology for an hour. Replace that time with something that’s juicy for you (perhaps a walk in nature or your favorite physical activity.)
  • I will take at least one “should” off my to do list. I dare you. See if the world comes to a hault. I bet it doesn’t. ☺

Sending you love, grace and peace as you glide through the Valentine’s Day Holiday!

But first some pancakes… (I am blogging from the Finger Lakes today. Staying at my sister’s ski house for the weekend.)

So many women are people pleasers that I often wonder if it’s in our DNA? And I think that the “shoulds” are intertwined with people pleasing. I’m finding that as I let go of the “shoulds,” my people pleasing tendencies are losing their grip on me.

That’s allowing me to find me again, not the mom, daughter, wife (when I was one!), but just me. It’s giving me courage to stretch myself and get out of my comfort zone to see what other possibilities are out there. And the best part is that I’ve found joy and happiness in life that I haven’t experienced in a very long time, if ever!

Thanks for reminding me that there is another gremlin or two that I might need to tackle :)

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

Hi Lori! You are so right — we women seem wired to “please.” And the should’s do get tangled up in the wanting to be pleasing for others.

So glad you are stretching out of your comfort zone and tapping into who Lori is about (vs the roles you’ve had as mom/daughter/wife) JOY is a great sign you are right on track!!

Which of the self-love challenges will you take on this week?

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

One of my favorite love songs…Bette Midler “The Rose”

    What’s one of yours?

    Hi Heather :)
I absolutely love this post and everything that you have mentioned is something I can relate to, being a Woman, Mother, Wife and new business owner. I was intrigued by your environmental gremlins, as I’ve noticed how flourescent lighting, tv, computer effect me big time, so I am careful to keep incandescent lights in my bedroom and office and also use emf blocking discs for computer and tv, which really help to harmonize the radiation.

And, oh boy, don’t get me started on the should list :) , which is what my focus will be this week. To minimize the shoulds, and create a “My Soul Wants to Experience List” :)

P.S. the paper cup with the hearts drawn on is so cute!

    Blessings,
    Jen

    Heather,
It all starts with self-love and litereally “dating” ourselves. How we treat oursleves sets the stage for how others will treat us.
I find that keeping a journal of gratitude as well as a journal of success helps to keep me on track, too.
Thanks for sharing your simple but powerful self-love strategies.
    Write on!~

    Hi Heather!

Thank you for the wonderful article! As I Feng Shui consultant I tend to “fix” the zappers that are environmental but forget to focus on my personal zappers. I work to help others so much that I can end a day feeling very drained. It was wonderful to be reminded of the things that I can do to pep myself up….and LOVE myself more! One of my favorite tricks is to take a hot bath with sea salt and quartz crystals! Quartz energizes and dispells negativity! What an amazing treat!

Thank you again! Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!

  • http://www.ReClaimedInteriors.webs.com Allison

What a great idea! A “My Soul Wants to Experience List” I think I may try that!

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

    Hi Jen,
Love that you are conscious of creating a soul loving environment. I have always noticed a big difference between fluorescent lighting and using a lamp in my office.

YES to the “Soul Wants List” Love that.

That paper cup was actually from Starbucks. I took a photo of it from last Valentine’s Day. Love it too. :)

Blessings to you! Thanks for being here.

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

Hi Lisa! Love seeing you here.

On Thursday, Lisa Berry is sharing a concept she has about “Dating Your Diet” — which I think goes well with your tip to “Date Ourselves.” So true.

I like your idea of having a gratitude and success journal. I’ve kept a gratitude list for years and find it so helpful to get present the positive (which there is always plenty of when we put our attention on it).

Any special plans for yourself to celebrate V-day week Lisa? (inquiring minds want to know…)

  • http://www.facebook.com/spiritrich Jen Buscher

Allison-it really shifts your perspective when you title your list this way, and then you can see the difference in quality of being as opposed to quantity of doing :)

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

    Allison,
A sea salt / quart crystal bath…now your talking. I’ve done espon salt baths, which I love. For the crystals, is it a product you use or do you put actual crystals in your bath water?

Well I am glad that today’s post was a welcome reminder for you to take good care of yourself. I often need to remind myself. Especially when I am sucked into a big work project of helping others, I need to remember to unplug and balance out with self-care. (Otherwise my once passionate work, turns into stress and pushing.)

And it’s so wonderful to *meet* you. Would love to learn more about your work. Do you know Sue Rasmussen of “Unclutter-Organize-Transform”? There might be a nice connection there.

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

Back from a 2 hour snow boarding session. Felt good to unplug for a bit!

Do you have a favorite way to unplug? (And take yourself away from technology and the to do list)

  • http://www.facebook.com/spiritrich Jen Buscher

Allison-the bath of sea salt and quartz crystal sounds wonderful :)

    Hi Heather!

I don’t personally know Sue but I subscribe to her newsletters and LOVE receiving them in my email. I would love to share Feng Shui with you and the Life Balancing program that I have developed. It combines the inner work necessary for the outer work “Feng Shui” to be successful!

The quartz I use are plain raw chunks that I pick up while walking on my property. I clear them in sea salt and then put them in my bath! :) If you would like to email me later I would be happy to send you a few. :) I actually sell them on my website. My email is ReClaimedInteriors@yahoo.com

It was wonderful to *meet* you too! :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/spiritrich Jen Buscher

Let’s see…gardening, taking walks, a great book, guided meditations, essential oil baths, going shopping with my daughter :)

    haven’t tried snow boarding yet!

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

    Great Allison.

I’m looking forward to trying out this quart crystal bath!! And connecting with your further.

    I love this one!!
I remember the first time I ever heard someone say…the most important love affair you’ll have is with yourself. lol…I was having my first facial. It stuck with me and every time I feel Ive been “zapped”…low on energy, drained..I simply remember that I love myself and it puts a smile in my heart.
Heather, I find that the computer intellectually stimulates me BUT physically drains me. My favourite way to treat myself form computer work and fun…is to use natural eyes tear drops and yoga…lots of stretching to keep blood flow going. Thank you so much for your thoughtful and loving article!

  • Mary Kay

Favorite remedies: Doing morning pages at a café. Getting 8+ hrs of sleep. Going to the salon. Cleaning off my desk. Skying with BFF, baths, reading personal development books. running.

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

Lisa — YES, so true. Computer is access to much mental stimulation, but I find it physically draining also (my brain feels dizzy after too much time and I can forget about my posture).
I find it helpful to use a timer sometimes, so that it reminds me to take a break, stretch and now I’ll have to add in — drop my eyes with natural tears (nice!)

    Thanks for sharing Lisa!

These are GREAT Mary Kay. Love every single one of these.
And what is it about journaling at a cafe? One of my favorite things in the world. Love to do it when I am traveling too. Helps me to reconnect and take in more deeply the journey.

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

I only started snow boarding in my 30′s. It’s been such a great challenge! Though the learning curve was a bit painful…many bruises.

Love guided meditations! And walks is one of my all time — must do every week (if not day), activities. Of course having a dog helps too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/spiritrich Jen Buscher

signing off for the evening ladies. Going to enjoy a home made dinner by my husband, then a relaxing bubble bath before some red carpet action and watching the grammies :) …Thank you Heather for creating this sacred space today, and love and blessings to all of you!

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

Enjoy your marvelous evening, Jen! (I love watching the whole red carpet stuff too…Grammy night should be fun.)
And thank you for bringing yourself to the blog today. It’s been wonderful to have your sweet energy here.

Come back for more this week!! <3

    Great article, Heather!

Even though you know these things, it’s such a good reminder …

Take time away from people and things that ZAP you and rejuvenate by doing something nice for yourself.

This morning I had a serious “come-apart” around my computer and technology. It took over three hours to upload a video that should have taken less than 15 minutes! I was enraged! (My poor neighbors … ) Anywoo …

Although I “lost” three hours and had to DO a buncha stuff, I dropped everything and went to the pool. Within 30 minutes of being in sun and water, I was rejuvenated! Hail ya!

Ready to face the afternoon feeling the luv …

    Out, Out “Should” Gremlin!!!

    Thanks Heather! Great stuff!

    See you tomorrow!
    Love, Cherry

Hi Heather! What a great article! – love the gremlins – what a clever way of helping us ‘see’ this. I love it that you are sharing these insights with the world. :)

I can totally fall into the people-pleasing thing – including at home, even when I know it’s not always the kindest and most authentic way of being. There’s always been a bit of ‘don’t rock the boat’ in me, it seems.

I also really love your energy zappers into energy juicers idea. That is a GREAT one. When it comes to changing our behaviours, it is much more fun and appealing to do a swapperoo like you suggest, rather than just try to ‘cut out zapping behaviour’.

    This is great!
    :)

    Alex

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

Cherry – so true, “knowing something” never seems to be enough vs. walking the talk.

And ohhh, the tech gremlins. I know them so well. I do find that when I get all bunched up with some tech glitch, I either need to get it off my plate and to someone else, OR simply walk away from the computer for a bit (amazing how that works, so many times — almost as if my energy causes some of the glitchy gremlins to go to town…)

So excited to share the video that was created!! It’s AMAZING. And so captures your sense of fun (while teaching great information)

    LOVE YOU.

    “see you” tomorrow

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

Alex — you and I were spun from the same wool (I think that’s the saying…) I am so a “don’t rock the boat” person. And it gets me in trouble at times. I find most people prefer I just be honest vs. “nice.” But when I am in the middle of being “pleasing” it can be hard for me to even know what is honest. That’s when I need to get regrounded and regroup with myself.

The “swaperoo” does work well! Another great “alexism” :^)
Looking forward to TUESDAY with you!!

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

    Signing off for today!!
