Oh, it is that time of year when we set goals and set the intention for what we want to create in 2012…  So what do we do when those new goals don’t quite take shape the way we want too? Now I know you are scratching your heads, saying to yourselves, he did say New Goals right and not resolutions? Yes indeed I did say goals. Personally I don’t like resolutions, they are too short term to me and chances are they get broken within a week or two. Right? Yeah, you know because you’ve made a few and broken a few in your lifetime, so have I.

So, goals to me seem to last longer. They are long term. I mean if you take a hockey player or a soccer player who scores a goal, they last so long that they go into record books and onto the back of hockey cards. So goals are long lasting.

Measured
SMART goals are measurable.                     (photo credit: jronaldlee)

This new year coming up, I say resolve to set goals. Goals have to be SMART too. By smart I don’t mean that it’s a comparison between silly goals and smart goals…I mean maybe a silly goal is the thing you need to motivate you this year…

When I say SMART, I am referring to goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. You can actually look at the goals you are setting and you can actually achieve it, there is a measurement to it, it’s possible for you to achieve it and do so in a timely fashion.

You see, when you make goals you want to tip the scales of success in your favour. I love reaching my goals and so I set them around the 5 cornerstones of my life. I take a wholistic approach to goal setting.

In fact, I call my wholistic approach, the “SWIFT” method.
I set goals within this framework so that all aspects of my life are in balance.

To me, my life is based on S…which are “SOCIAL” goals, one of the social goals I set out to accomplish each year is to go on a blind date for example, yes I am single and am wanting to meet that certain special someone. Another “SOCIAL” or “S” goal is to have a party with friends and another one is to go see jazz concerts…these are definitely attainable goals…and they’re fun too!

My “W” in the “SWIFT” method is “WORK” goals. Being in business I want to work on my website, get 2 new accounts, and develop a new brochure this next few months.

The “I” goals means “INNER”. This involves prayer, meditation, reading, learning…as Dr. Stephen Covey says, these are the things you do to “sharpen the saw” so to speak. Some of my “INNER” goals include prayer and meditation.

My “F” goals mean “FINANCIAL.” Oh yes, I want to pay down my debts like anyone else and contribute to my RRSP and start and RESP too this year…pretty honorable financial goals huh?

Lastly, my “T” goals in the “SWIFT” method refer to the things in my life that need “Taking Care of”. That means health, family and yes my weight watchers meetings…when you combine these core areas of your life I believe you are beginning to live in balance.

So what do you do to keep these goals in sight and what can you do to encourage you to stay focused?

My recommendation is take it all on, live life full out, play by the “SWIFT” method…but divide the tasks up and into categories and headings. The next step is to assign the necessary tasks to accomplish the goals and address the issues in each area of your “SWIFT”.

I do this on a large piece of Bristol board and use 3M post-it-notes to write down each action step I need. On the Post-it-notes are the tasks or goals. Once completed, I remove each note and put up a new task that needs to be done.

The post-it-notes act as big reminders for me and give me focus. On each note are the actions I need to take in each area of my business. The Bristol board can be decorated and fun. If you want, you can include motivational sayings and pictures as decorations and to help keep you motivated during the lean times.

Once you are re-focused to the tasks you need to take on in your business, you start to feel good because you are always in action around key areas of your business. And trust me…when you are in action, those results will come!

So work on creating your “Action Board”. It’s amazing when you think about things to do in your business, write down your goals and actions and see it in front of you every day, what can happen. I use a board similar to this and I find it keeps me focused.

Below, I have an example of an “Action Board” for you to see what I am talking about. As you can see, the chart lists each key goal or task. Use post-it-notes so that once one task is complete you can remove it and identify another task, goal or action step.

So don’t get panicky about resolutions set goals around the areas that really matter to you this year. Just take action and stay in action. You will love the results!

Welcome to another Soul-filled CAFE.  David, thanks for being our generous host and expert today.  It is a great time to be looking at setting up goals for the upcoming new year.

The main thing I find challenging about setting goals is choosing the right goals (ones that will continue to inspire me next month) and allowing enough flexibility for all of the unforseen elements that you cannot see from the starting gate.

In fact I have become someone who doesn’t set a lot of goals in my life anymore.  I wrote about it here:  http://www.soulfilledlife.com/2010/12/30/2011-imagine-living/

David – any thoughts on when goals become confining instead or empowering, and how to avoid the syndrome of having goals actually make you feel worse b/c you drop some or make unforseen changes.

~hope I’m not starting you off with too tough of a question. Feel free to grab your tea or latte first and just introduce yourself.  ;)

    warmest, heather

Any questions yet Heather? Also a good chilly morning to you…I have my coffee in hand and am ready to rock the cafe!

  • David Cohen

I think you’re goals need to be part of the bigger picture Heather…start with a vision and a dream that inspires you and think of the end in mind and then work back, how did you reach that goal, what were the steps you took to get there…maybe look at goals as steps…and also add an element of play to your goals…so they aren’t so confining…make it fun, a challenge, a project…I hope that helps…

    Good morning, Heather and David,

Thanks so much to both of you for sharing your wisdom today!

I love your “Swift” approach…you really get to the heart of the main things most people want in life. It’s great!

And I want to add a bit more about the question Heather asked…nothing like starting out with the tough stuff right away, hmmm?!?

I have gone back and forth about setting goals in my life as well. I used to set them, create a detailed plan, then spend more time tracking the plan than enjoying what I was doing.

I’ve seen my clients do the same thing, and then end up feeling like they are failing or falling behind on “the plan.”

And having a spreadsheet of plans all at once – wow.

What is your suggestion for those of us who have found detailed planning to become more of a challenge than a support – how could we still use the Swift approach and also allow for our changing, evolving lives and inspirations to unfold?

    Thanks so much!

    Warmly,
    Sue

  • David Cohen

i Sue, I like planning, don’t get me wrong, but with a plan you need to be flexible, things change, situations and people change…so you need to plan but add in the notion of flexibility…so I like creating a vision and mission and having the big picture in mind and then goals and steps to reach the heights you set, but you need flexibility in planning…

Flexibility helps for a few reasons, one is sometimes you’re mood can change and maybe you don’t want to work on the goal that day, and that’s okay right?

Sometimes you have to go with the flow a little…and make deals with yourself, I will ease up today, but do the goal stuff tomorrow or the next day.
The bottom line is don’t be too hard on yourself, be open to change, to being flexible.
Also, set daily goals, and work on the most important things first, once you’re done, you’re good to go to the more fun things.

I think you have to weave your way around your goals, keep them in place and in mind, but allow for flexibility and change!

    I hope this helps.

  • http://www.unclutter-organize-transform.com/ Sue Rasmussen

    Hi, David,

Thanks so much for your response…and for the reminder to invite in flexibility and change!

    Warmly,
    Sue

  • David Cohen

You’re most welcome Sue, thanks for being here…I remember one Saturday in the summer, and I had in mind to go to a Jazz Fest in a city about an hour away from where I live and I was possibly going to go with a friend…but plans were loosely formed…that day of the Jazz Fest came and I was feeling a little low energy and almost didn’t want to go to the Jazz Fest an hour away…it was a day I needed to just be by myself too. So by 3 pm in the afternoon I finally left for the event and got there at about 4:30 pm…I shpooled around the festival for a bit and then left it for an hour or so to work out at a gym I belong too that has branches across the region…I had a fabulous workout, got my house work done in the morning, got to be lazy for a bit and then at night I took in more of the jazz fest and had a blast, I even danced with a beautiful woman…so…that day I needed to just go with the flow, with my own innate energy and listen to my body, but I got everything done, just on my own terms and no schedule…this is the flexibility part to having a goal, sometimes you just need to stretch the time frame a bit…and keep your eyes on the prize!

    Hey David,

I love the idea of the bristol board with your SWIFT goals. Just what I needed. Do you also break it down into monthly goals in addition to yearly goals?

    Best,

    Juliet

  • Angie Bianco

David…I like the post it notes on a bristol board…it makes it more real and attainable.  I certainly know where I would like to go but I think a visual is key…a daily reminder…
    Thanks for that idea.

It does…and to contradict myself  ;-)   I want to share about a recent project using goal setting that’s been a wonderful experience…

I am on the end of completing a big  dream goal for my life right now.
In August I set the goal to purchase a home. (Which after 2 years of
traveling and having my things in storage and living in temporary spots,
was a big deal.)   The closing is set for tomorrow and it’s been a
whirl wind few months.  I have to say — that the BEST thing for me
about setting this goal was the learning and discovering I did about
myself.  Plenty of fear came up in the process, and by taking next steps
anyway, I was able to accomplish something that in the past I had
chosen to tell myself I wasn’t ready for yet.

Had I not set an intention and goal — a. I may not have bought a home
and b. if I did, it would have been something that just happened vs.
something I set out to do and learned from (which is a powerful
process).  But I noticed that having a “detachment” to the goal also was
really good for myself — so that I was more than anything else,
willing to learn about where I get stopped and when I need to change
    directions.  If that makes sense…

All to say the whole process is making me excited to set some new goals
for other parts of my life.  But I plan to only set 1 or 2 to play with
vs. setting up goals for every area of my life.

  • http://www.soulfilledlife.com Heather Gray

Hola  Sue!  I love that you added your comment in — as it’s been so much fun to have endless chats with you about soul-filled/uncluttered living.  And goals just seem to be one of those “grey areas” — where sometimes it works to have them and sometimes they become obstacles.

Which is why (as you know) I am such a fan of following our internal “Golden Compass” on these things.

    xoxo

  • David Cohen

Angie, the post notes re-affirm, that once the task is done, it’s done, it allows you to create something else, be it in your business or personal life…and we all want to be creating something new…and doing something new, it keeps us fresh!  Thanks for your post!

  • David Cohen

Hi Juliet, you can break it down into monthly, quarterly or yearly, some of the goals I put up there are consistent…like working out at the gym, that’s a repeat constantly goal…oh and Juliet you can break this down for your business too…so instead of the SWIFT headings it could be SMART headings…Sales, Marketing, Assignments, Research and Tasks …so this chart idea can be used as a great project management tool too!

  • Grant Miller

Hello David!  I really like the “swift” action board but can you recommend a process or system for reviewing and filing?  ie: when things are filed, out of site, out of mind.  Should this simply be posted on a cork board?

  • Spice Ballet

Hello David, thank you for your post. It couldn’t have come at a better time. I was just thinking of doing a balanced scorecard or something comprehensive for my life for next year. As a new entrepreneur, coming from a busy corporate world, my new role as a mom-preneur requires a certain focus. But balanced scorecard, although effective, seemed a bit too complicated to be followed on an ongoing basis. Your SWIFT method is not only Social, Work, Inner, Financial and Taking Care of but also Simple Welcoming Interesting Functional and Thorough…. :-) .. I have the template and its the time to use it now…thanks for being the star that you are…

  • David Cohen

I suggest you get a good CRM software package Grant, to track client exchanges and data. You can get shareware CRM products online that won’t cost you a thing…failing that it’s always good to have filing methods that work, rule of thumb is never touch the same document twice…hard to do eh?

But organizing yourself helps you save a ton of time and helps you manage the steady stream of paperwork we get on a daily basis…have a place for everything and put it in it’s place once you have reviewed it or read it Grant.

If you hate organizing things…you can always hire a Professional Organizer, they claim the average business owner wastes 9 days a year, looking for lost files and paperwork.

    Hope this helps.
    Thanks for dropping by!
    David

  • David Cohen

Thanks Nidz, wow, remember though, it takes a star to know one!!! Right!!!
    You’re a pretty remarkable one too…keep shining in 2012!
    Cheers! David

Yes! And it’s amazing how one ‘small’ topic like goal setting has such richness and self-growth when we truly start exploring what works best for us.

Truly following our inner “Golden Compass,” like you said. :)

  • Linda

Hi David,  I’m starting a small  in-home sales business and sales is a new direction for me, I’ve been in the social services field all my working life.  I like the SWIFT board, posi-it idea a lot.  My question is – what are your suggestions for jump starting a new, not so familiar approach to working with the public? I’ve been a little timid /cautious about selling.
