About Tad Hargrave
Tad Hargrave is a hippy who developed a knack for marketing (and then learned how to be a hippy again). For almost a decade, he has been touring his marketing workshops around Canada, bringing refreshing and unorthodox ideas to conscious entrepreneurs and green businesses that help them grow their organizations and businesses (without selling their souls).
He’s also considered a pioneer and leading thinker in the field of ‘Hub Marketing‘ (and is puttering on a book about it’).
Tad answers Vanity Fair’s Leading Men Quiz:
What is your idea of perfect happiness? Intimate conversations with old friends in quirky, independent cafes late at night in far off cities and then traipsing and tree climbing.
What is your greatest fear? Being shunned by a community. happened once. terrible feeling.
Which living person do you most admire? A couple, Jon and Peggy in Thailand who run this organic farm and sustainable living center are pretty high on the list.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? My social awkwardness around people i think are cooler than me.
What is your greatest extravagance? The doctor who convention in the UK i’m going to at the end of March.
What is your favorite journey? I took the train from Toronto to Edmonton once. Two days. It was incredible to see so much of Canada.
On what occasion do you lie? A surprising amount I think. Whenever I’m scared I won’t get what I want or I’ll lose what I have.
What do you dislike most about your appearance? I wish i were more muscly.
Which living person do you most despise? I can’t name them but I know who they are. Working on letting that go.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse? Totes. Totally. Wow. Awesome. “Put your hands on the counter and give me all the money in your vault”. Those kinds of things.
What is your greatest regret? No comment.
What or who is the greatest love of your life? Doctor Who.
When and where were you happiest? The Yuba river in Northern California. Anytime I go. Baked by the sun from above. Baked by the rocks from below. Perfect temperature, crystal clear water. Heaven.
Which talent would you most like to have? To be a better dancer. I feel generally awkward when dancing.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? That I would be more chill and take less things so personally but also to pay more attention to what I notice. I’m super sensitive and I’d to have that as information not as something that triggers insecurity. And to feel less snappy with service people when things don’t happen immediately.
If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be? More open and honest communication about what’s happening in our lives.
What do you consider your greatest achievement? Helping a friend not kill herself years ago.
What is your most treasured possession? My father’s wedding ring. He passed away when I was nine.
What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? To have no community or friends.
Where would you like to live? So many places. Montreal. Vancouver. Victoria. Toronto. Halifax. London, England. So. Many. Places.
What is your favorite occupation? What i’m doing right now. Marketing coach for hippies. Bam!
What is your most marked characteristic? My capacity to recall corny kid jokes. I. Am. A. Machine.
What is the quality you most like in a man? So comfortable in his own skin he can be welcoming and encouraging to all.
What is the quality you most like in a woman? A sense of awe and wonder, the capacity to appreciate the beauty in the world matched with self respect and sass.
What do you most value in your friends? The capacity to check in instead of shutting down and making assumptions about me.
Who are your heroes in real life? John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America. He left the family fortune of Baskin Robbins to follow his integrity and work for a better world. So much respect.
My friend Jennifer who keeps risking everything to tell the truth. Again and again. It’s incredible. It’s so inspiring. She’s one of the most authentic people I know in the world.
My friends Ocean and Michele who are parents of two amazing autistic boys. I’ve rarely met two people more committed to honest communication and being real with each other. I feel like I’ve learned so much from them.
I think a big theme for me is the respect of people willing to risk everything for the truth.
What are your favorite names? Anything Irish or Scottish.
What is it that you most dislike? Pretense. Especially when I do it.
If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? Myself. So many things I’d want to change. Oh the girls in high school who I’d ask out.
How would you like to die? Very old. In my sleep. Having lived a full and wonderful life.
What is your motto? Do what makes the best memories. Working on that one.
